Macavity

Chestnut named Macavity right after she showed up.  She is the only cat I've ever seen who was able to get out of a window well.  Somehow she climbs up the tiny ridges on the edge of the hole.  Due to that, he named her after a poem.

Macavity: The Mystery Cat

Macavity's a Mystery Cat: He's called the Hidden Paw-
For he's the master criminal who can defy the Law.
He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair:
For when they reach the scene of crime- Macavity's not there!

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
He's broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity.
His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare,
And when you reach the scene of crime- Macavity's not there!
You may seek him in the basement, you may look up in the air-
But I tell you once and once again, Macavity's not there!

Macavity's a ginger cat, he's very tall and thin;
You would know him if you saw him, for his eyes are sunken in.
His brow is deeply lined with thought, his head is highly domed;
His coat is dusty from neglect, his whiskers are uncombed.
He sways his head from side to side, with movements like a snake;
And when you think he's half asleep, he's always wide awake.

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
For he's a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity.
You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square-
But when a crime's discovered, then Macavity's not there!

He's outwardly respectable. (They say he cheats at cards.)
And his footprints are not found in any file of Scotland Yard's.
And when the larder's looted, or the jewel-case is rifled,
Or when the milk is missing, or another Peke's been stifled,
Or the greenhouse glass is broken, and the trellis past repair-
Ay, there's the wonder of the thing! Macavity's not there!

And when the Foreign Office find a Treaty's gone astray,
Or the Admiralty lose some plans and drawings by the way,
There may be a scrap of paper in the hall or on the stair-
But it's useless to investigate- Macavity's not there!
And when the loss has been disclosed, the Secret Service say:

"It must have been Macavity!"- But he's a mile away.
You'll be sure to find him resting, or a-licking of his thumbs,
Or engaged in doing complicated long division sums.

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
There never was a Cat of such deceitfulness and suavity.
He always has an alibi, and one or two to spare:
At whatever time the deed took place- MACAVITY WASN'T THERE!

And they say that all the cats whose wicked deeds are widely known
(I might mention Mongojerrie, I might mention Griddlebone)
Are nothing more than agents for the Cat who all the time
Just controls thheir operations: the Napoleon of Crime!

Very, Very UNfantastic Mr. Fox

Right now I'm feeling A LOT like Bogus, Bunce, and Bean and am beginning to see the other side of the Fantastic Mr. Fox story.  I feel like shooting a particular fox out of it's breeches (and I won't be hitting just the tail.)
Last night we went swimming for a ward mutual activity and came back a long time after dark.  Last week we took down the chicken fence and used it to repair the goat fence, so the chicken pen was exposed.
This morning Almond Joy went out to do the Banties and every single one of our gorgeous little chickens was lying dead in the yard.
A fox or some other animal had gotten into the chicken coop and killed every single one.
Expect Revenge.  Very, very soon.
Every predator comes back to the scene of the crime the night after to see if there's any more. We'll be waiting. . . .

"I Fell into a Burning Ditch of Fire. . . ."

We Burned the Ditches yesterday.  It was quite the adventure, as you can see.

Everyone was busy filling up buckets of water for 'insurance', banging out mini-fires with their shovels, and generally having a good time.

Corn Nut had a blast.

My Dad and Cashew oversaw the work (and helped, of course.)  My uncle from Utah came up to visit with the cousins- it was a blast.

And the lovebirds.  Ahh. . . .
The end to a great day.

A New Face

Last week, we had some friends come over and drop off a goat for stud service.  It is SOOO different having a flop-eared one in the pen!

My Favorite Genre

I am a Fantasy lover.  To most people this comes up as a nerd reading dragon books.  I hope I'm not that kind, but who knows?  :)
I probably love reading fantasy because I have a crazy imagination.  And because I love reading fantasy, I write fantasy- and hope to be able to publish it someday!
My current favorite is the Leven Thumps series by Obert Skye.  I absolutely love it.  But, I'm always looking for something better if you have any suggestions!

I also love Romantic Comedy, preferably Mormon ones.  I really like the Robert Farrell Smith books.  They are absolutely hilarious and really cute, too.  I have no idea why the picture's tiny, so please forgive me.  :)
Happy Reading!

Happy St. Pat's!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!
I hope everyone's had a great one.  This is kind of off topic, but in a way, it has a lot to do with it.  St. Patrick's day is right before spring officially starts.  Here in Idaho, we're only beginning to see the first of the spring winds.  But right about now is the time that everyone goes crazy with spring fever.
My mom's ordered about a gazillion seeds from herb catalogs.

My Dad's planning the pastures.

I'M looking forward to the goats kidding.

But St. Patrick's day is themed on GREEN.  It, in my opinion, is the trumpet-blower for spring arriving and things being GREEN again.  I about went crazy with delight when I heard birds singing again.  I hadn't missed it all winter- but now I couldn't live without it!  I'm looking forward to the summers when we can go to spots like THIS.

Isn't Idaho lovely???

And the Summer skies. . . Ahh. . .

The only problem is. . .

Right now. . .

It looks like this.  Mud.  Oh Well.

Marvelous Meat Pie

A week or so ago my mom made this marvelous pie for dinner.  It was absolutely delicious.  And. . . I took some pretty amazing pictures of it, so it was destined to become a post.  Here it is.

We replaced the tomato sauce with beef broth and baked it in a cast-iron skillet.  Boy was it good!

Beef Cowboy Pie:
2 Tbsp. Butter
2 Tbsp. Flour
1 Pint Tomato sauce
1 Pint diced canned stewing beef
2 Tbsp. dehydrated onion or 2 medium raw onions, chopped
1 Pint cubed potatoes
1 tsp. pepper
1 Tbsp. dehydrated beef stock soup base
1 tsp. chili powder
1 tsp. celery seed
A Double Pie Crust however you like to make it.

Melt Butter in a heavy medium cast iron frying pan.  Add flour, mixing well, then tomato sauce. If necessary, add just enough water to make a medium sauce.  Add rest of ingredients, stirring gently.  Top with crust and bake at 350 F until perfect.

Sorry, we got this recipe from a canning article in Backwoods Home Magazine, and most of the ingredients are listed as canned stuff.  Substitute fresh if you want to.
